Interdisciplinary Graduate Research Workshop: "Performing Fieldwork in Authoritarian and Democratic States" (Seminar)

Laura Dean, Political Science/WGSS

Tuesday October 29, 2013
12:30pm - 2:00pm
Hall Center, Seminar Room
Conducting research in a foreign country can be challenging on its own but performing this research in a non-democratic country presents its own obstacles and challenges. In this presentation, Dean will discuss the differences between conducting fieldwork in authoritarian and democratic countries. She will examine different approaches to conducting this research, how to organize your fieldwork, and ways to keep your information and data safe. Dean will rely on her experiences with archival research, interviews, and ethnographic participant observation from the 15 months of fieldwork she conducted for her dissertation in Russia, Ukraine, and Latvia.
