DESCRIPTION:Bodies in Focus: Power\, Subjectivity\, and Practice in East Eu
ropean and Eurasian Studies\n\nBodies in Focus Series\, Panel 1: Why Bodie
 s Matter\nNovember 8\, 10:00am via Zoom\n\nThis six-part virtual event ser
ies will examine body matters within Eurasia through a variety of discipli
nes and themes. The body-as-method has emerged recently to provide novel i
nsights on society\, culture\, and identity by foregrounding alternatives
to Western traditions that marginalized the corporeal dimensions of social
and personal existence.\n\nWhy is the body good “to think with” on bo
th intellectual and professional matters?\n\nHow do classed\, diversely ab
led\, gendered\, and raced bodies interact in the daily lives we study or
inhabit through our avocations? \n\nWhat is the continuously evolving rela
tionship between the body and the body politic\, whether the nation\, empi
re\, the EU\, or NATO?\n\nIs research and teaching disembodying and can re
centering “embodied and uncomfortable knowledge” therefore move libera
tion in East European and Eurasian Studies forward?\n\nTo address these qu
estions\, "Bodies in Focus" will have six virtual\, recorded panels featur
ing speakers from various disciplines and institutions. Panelists and the
audience will explore how bodies matter for the study and teaching of East
European and Eurasian social and material environments\, our understandin
g of power and equity\, and for the cultivation of human capacities in our
field.\n\nModerator: Vitaly Chernetsky\, Association for Slavic\, East Eu
ropean\, and Eurasian Studies & University of Kansas\n\nSpeakers: Maria Cr
 istina Galmarini\, William & Mary\n Pawel Lewicki\, Indep
endent Scholar\n Darya Tsymbalyuk\, University of Chicago
