The US government has dictated past national science policy to varying degrees, sometimes yielding notable outcomes (the Apollo program, Operation Warp Speed, e.g.). The current administration has been particularly ambitious in its plans to re-define and re-organize domestic science priorities. We'll consider past outcomes for Russian/Soviet science, under similar circumstances, and also comment on the contemporary state of, and future prospects for, Russian science overall.
