View mapInterested in speeding up literature searches or improving your writing or editing skills? Are trainees asking if it’s ok to use AI? This talk will be useful to anyone writing a manuscript or grant proposal, or faculty who are interested in advising trainees on how to effectively edit their own writing.
This interactive workshop will cover AI-assisted tools that can help improve writing and editing (e.g., giving suggestions to make text more concise). We will discuss generative AI, including ethics and why not to use generative AI. The presentation will include information on Scite.ai, EditGPT, PerfectIt, ReallyWrite, and advanced features in Word. Attendees will get a PDF of the presentation.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this talk, you will be able to:
1) Understand the difference between AI-assisted tools and generative AI (GenAI).
2) List a few cautions to know when using GenAI.
3) Describe AI-assisted tools for literature searches, writing, and editing.
Ellen Kuwana, MS, is an award-winning science writer. For 20 years, she was part of biomedical research teams at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Research Institute. She is a nationally recognized expert in science communications who gives talks on AI, plain language, and career paths. Her father, Ted (“TK”) Kuwana was a chemistry professor at KU. Ellen has a MS in neuroscience from UCSF and a BS in organismal biology from University of Kansas.
Ellen has written and edited more than 500 scientific articles and dozens of federal proposals exceeding $89 billion in grants and contracts. She is past president of the NW Science Writers Association, a regional nonprofit that anyone with an interest in science communications can join. She has organized more than 100 monthly professional development offerings for the National Association of Science Writers and moderated their 2023 conference plenary, AI & the Media. Ellen has mentored 50 students and postdoctoral scholars in science writing. She runs her own freelance business, Kuwana Consulting LLC.
