This session will describe and compare the general principles and components of 12-Step Programs and SMART Recovery, highlighting what is known about the experiences and outcomes of LGBTQ people in each of these programs. This session will provide strategies for working with members of the LGBTQ+ community in make decisions about which mutual help resources to access and how to support LGBTQ+ clients to most benefit from these resources. 


At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:  

  • Describe the general principles and components of 12-Step programs and SMART Recovery
  • Identify benefits and challenges that LGBTQ+ people may experience when engaging with 12-Step programs and SMART Recover
  • Employ strategies for supporting LGBTQ+ clients struggling with addiction to decide whether and/or how to participate in 12-Step programs and SMART Recovery
