CHINA Town Hall (CTH), a two-part program that provides a snapshot of the current U.S.-China relationship and examines how that relationship reverberates at the local level – in our towns, states, and nation, connects Americans around the country with U.S. policymakers and thought leaders on China.  CTH is a program of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. This year's local program is sponsored by the KU Trade War Lab, the KU Center of East Asian Studies (CEAS), the International Relations Council of Kansas City (IRC), and the US Heartland China Association (USHCA).  

 

Local Town Hall / KU Trade War Speaker Series  |  5 - 6 PM CT

Dr. Ketian Vivian Zhang will present on her new book China's Gambit: The Calculus of Coercion (Cambridge UP, 2023)Her book examines when, why, and how China attempts to coerce states over perceived threats to its national security. 

 

Dr. Zhang is an assistant professor of international security in the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. She studies rising powers, coercion, economic statecraft, and maritime disputes in international relations and social movements in comparative politics, with a regional focus on China and East Asia. Zhang bridges the study of international relations and comparative politics and has a broader theoretical interest in linking international security and international political economy.

Dr. Ketian Zhang’s book talk will be followed by a national broadcast featuring this year’s featured speaker U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Dr. Kurt Campbell.
