People with vulvas, especially cis women in straight relationships, experience fewer orgasms on average during partnered sex than people with penises. One study found that only 6% of cis women said they always orgasm during partnered sex, compared to 39% during masturbation. Despite this higher percentage of orgasms during solo sex, a masturbation gap exists alongside the orgasm gap. People with penises engage in solo sex at higher rates than people with vulvas. Yet, masturbation is an important predictor of sexual health and happiness for people with vulvas, more so than for people with penises. In fact, one of the best predictors of whether a person with a vulva will be able to achieve orgasm in their partnered sexual relations is a history of solo sex. Using a vibrator during solo sex is one way for people with vulvas to begin to close the orgasm and masturbation gaps.
