Join us for Day 4 of KU Faculty Development Academies: Graduate Student Mentorship

Mentorship is not a science. We all come into mentorship with our own personalities and expectations, while graduate students have varied perspectives and expectations of their own. In this session, we will seek to define what mentorship expectations should look like for both the mentor and the mentee (spoiler alert: this definition may vary by individual!). Additionally, we will present resources available to graduate students, best practices in providing constructive feedback, and mentoring needs throughout the student lifecycle. Time will be given to reflect and work through your own mentorship processes in order to build healthy mentorship habits.

Knowledge attendees will gain:

• Mentoring best practices
• How to set mentor-mentee expectations
• KU career and mental health resources available to graduate students

Skills attendees will learn:

• Facilitate constructive conversations with students when the mentorship relationship needs to be re-evaluated
• Effective interpersonal skills in mentorship

Capacity attendees will develop/expand:

•  Self-reflection of your role as a mentor
•  Increase in understanding of mentoring across various student types and recognizing your own differences/biases and how to act on those in constructive ways
• Unit-level understanding of how successful mentorship networks can look between you and your colleagues
Increased awareness of tools and best practices to facilitate the progression of student competency development and agency over their career and professional development

Thursday, May 16 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Location: Kansas Memorial Union, Jayhawk Room
