About this Event

The disability community has long advocated for their right to self-determine their lives. Research has established that promoting and enhancing self-determination leads to valued life outcomes for people with and without disabilities. However, there remain barriers to supporting self-determination across the life course for people with disabilities. This presentation will highlight research on self-determination over the past twenty years that has established definitional frameworks, assessments, and evidence-based interventions that promote self-determination to enhance school and community outcomes. Partnerships with the disability community will be highlighted, as will the importance of creating systems of supports that center people with disabilities in identifying the outcomes that are important to them.
Karrie A. Shogren, Ph.D., Director of the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities (a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities), Senior Scientist at the Schiefelbusch Life Span Institute, and Ross and Marianna Beach Distinguished Professor in the Department of Special Education all at the University of Kansas, will present her inaugural lecture, "Advancing Self-Determination: Building Systems of Supports with the Disability Community," at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, at the Kansas Room at the KU Memorial Union. The event is free and open to the public.
