Join the Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research for a special ecology seminar by Onofrio Mazzarisi, former KU postdoctoral researcher, now doing biological work at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. The talk is hybrid and open to the public.

Onofrio's talk will explore the details of population self-regulation, an essential factor that underlies the behavior of ecological communities, with important implications for how populations maintain balance and respond to changes. Onofrio will discuss:

  • How different forms of self-regulation influence diversity and stability in competitive communities — Diverse communities can be stable if the niche overlap among species is not complete; the more diverse the community is, the lower the overlap should be.
  • The challenges and perspectives of identifying the forms of population self-regulation from time series data — Analyzing experiments in batch culture conditions, he will show results that are at odds with classical expectations and discuss implications that extend beyond the impact of self-regulation on community dynamics.

Seminar talks of the Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research are held in the auditorium in Smissman Labs (Room 152) on KU's west campus. See complete information, including parking instructions, and our full schedule on our website. Join the email list for Friday seminars.
