The first Engaged Reading event of the Fall semester will feature Maggie Nelson's On Freedom: Four Songs of Care and Constraint. This event will take place in the Spencer Museum of Art.

Discussion facilitated by Shannon Stewart (Theatre & Dance) and Maggie Unverzagt Goddard (Museum Studies)

  • What do visual and performing arts reveal about ideas of freedom?
  • How do they reflect and inform larger societal notions of freedom?
  • How do curators guide conversations about meaning across cultures?

Healthy democracy fosters an exchange of ideas across experiences and knowledge. Rooting discussion in shared reading and collaborative understanding makes space for this exchange to emerge. Engaged Reading promotes learning and inquiry across populations at the University, through common texts. Inspired by the KU Reads / Common Book program, and curated with goals of generous and generative conversation, this series features broadly relevant texts for reading alongside facilitated discussion with scholars and practitioners in related fields.
