On Tuesday, 10/29, at 7 pm, join Christina James, Marian Phillips, Cori Deming, and Megan Williams for a Feminist Fright Fest + Booktoberfest screening and discussion of The Bride of Frankenstein in the North Gallery of the KU Kenneth Spencer Research Library. Snacks provided.
ABOUT THE FILM
In The Bride of Frankenstein (1935, 1h 15m), the sequel to the 1931 film adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the author reveals to her husband that Dr. Henry Frankenstein is still alive, and his monster did not perish in a fire, as most believed. While Dr. Frankenstein recovers, he is visited by his former mentor Dr. Pretorius, who wants to create a mate for the monster.

ABOUT THE DISCUSSANTS
Christina James (she/her) is a part-time Bookseller at the Raven Book Store and a Readers’ Services librarian at Lawrence Public Library. She is extremely passionate about spreading the gospel of horror fiction far and wide and you can find her on Instagram at @the_wandering_reader where she's known by her coven of creeps and ghouls as The Spooky Librarian.
Marian Phillips (they/them & she/her) is a PhD student in Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies at KU. Their research focuses on queer and trans* representation in horror media. Phillips's most recent publication "The Technological Closet: Black Mirror's Dystopic Image of Queer Futurity" appeared in Femspec (23.1). They earned their MA in Women's History from Sarah Lawrence College in 2018.
Cori Deming (they/them) serves as a KU Student Engagement Center Program Coordinator for Student Communities with a focus on queer and trans programming for students. They are an alum of the KU Higher Education Administration Master’s program and have previously worked in various Residential & Housing roles at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and Carlton College. As a self-described lifelong fan of horror, you can often find Cori watching, reading, and reviewing classic and upcoming works of horror and suspense in their spare time.
Megan Williams (she/her) is Assistant Director and Program Coordinator for Student Communities, focusing on feminist programs and women/femme students, with the KU Student Engagement Center. She earned her PhD in American Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from KU. Megan has published academic essays and taught college courses exploring representations of gender, race, class, sexuality, and disability in Hollywood films. She is the founder of Feminist Fright Fest.

FEMINIST FRIGHT FEST
This October, the KU Student Engagement Center is hosting the seventh annual Feminist Fright Fest with the support of campus and community partners. The objectives of Feminist Fright Fest are to explore the horror genre through an intersectional feminist lens; to provide a platform for horror creatives who are women, femmes, and people of marginalized genders; and to offer Halloween-themed programs and community events with a feminist bent. Booktoberfest (September 24 – October 29) is Lawrence Public Library's biggest event of the year for adult readers brought together by a shared love of reading and bookish events.
