Much of the remaining tallgrass prairie in Douglas County, Kansas, is used as grazing land for cattle. Like prairie haymeadows, these prairie pastures are an ecologically and culturally significant part of our landscape. With funding from the Douglas County Heritage Conservation Council, researchers Jennifer Moody and Jennifer Delisle of the Kansas Biological Survey conducted a study to determine the amount, distribution and condition of prairie pastures in the county. In this talk, they will share the results of their GIS analyses, field surveys and interviews with landowners, and discuss the challenges to retaining this vital component of our landscape.

Friday Ecology Seminar talks of the Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research are held in the auditorium in Smissman Labs (Room 152) on KU's west campus. Doors open at 12:05 p.m. See complete information, including parking instructions, and our full schedule on our website. Join the email list for Friday seminars. If you arrive very early, you may have a seat in 130/132 Takeru Higuchi Hall, the building immediately south of and just a few steps away from Smissman.
