On May 30, Hackberry Emperor butterflies began hatching in massive numbers—an annual natural event—and congregating along E  1600 Road in Douglas County. Come see the swirling clouds of butterflies at the entrance to the KU Field Station's Fitch Natural History Reservation this weekend, and be prepared to be covered in butterflies. This is a great chance to see (and photograph) a number of different butterfly species, but the Hackberry Emperor butterflies will be the most common species.

This area is open to the public every day, dawn to dusk, and visitors may come anytime. This is an unstructured drop-in program, with KU Field Station Education Program Coordinator Wendy Holman on site 2–4 p.m. Park across the road in the circle drive at the McColl Nature Reserve. No need to register. Bring your water bottle, camera and binoculars.
