Business + Health Care + Information Technology
Health information management is the practice of acquiring, analyzing and protecting medical information vital to providing quality patient care. It is a combination of business, health science and information technology.
When a patient has an encounter in the health system – whether it is a regular checkup with their doctor, a surgery or an emergency hospitalization – information is generated about that patient, their health and the visit. That information is extremely important, not only from a patient-care standpoint, but also for billing and quality of care. Someone has to manage that patient information behind the scenes ... and that’s where the health information manager comes in.
