Lava tubes are subsurface environments on Earth that provide unique hydrogeological niches for life to proliferate. Raman spectroscopy and other complementary techniques, such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used in our studies of lava tube systems. Collectively this data will improve our understanding of lava tube geomicrobiology and will help with current and future life detection missions on Mars.
