DESCRIPTION:“Warp and Weft of the Ozarks Uplift\, Phantom Sequences\, and
Origins of Carbonate Mud Mounds in Southwestern Missouri” Missouri’s
Ozarks plateaus region is a product of subtle deformation and epeirogenic
uplift that likely began during the middle Devonian\, spanning late Devoni
an and Mississippian time\, and culminating in the Pennsylvanian. Previous
investigators have shown that much of southern Missouri and northern Arka
 nsas was dissected by a series of right-lateral (NW-SE) and left-lateral (
SW-NE) strike-slip faults. Stratigraphic successions in southwestern Misso
uri are intertwined with structures\, hence a warp and weft analogy. Lower
Mississippian strata of southwestern Missouri include carbonate mud mound
s\, mostly in the Compton Limestone. These have been interpreted as bioher
ms (reef mounds)\, displaced reef mounds\, anomalous accumulations produce
d by baffling or mud-trapping organisms or microbial agents\, or in recent
interpretation\, slide or slump masses associated with fault movements. A
n effort to compare southwestern Missouri’s mounds with former and curre
nt type-mounds of Waulsort\, Anseremme\, and Celles-Gendron rail tunnel is
only partly complete and an ongoing international aspect of this study.
