The availability of software libraries for machine learning, in combinationwith the growing number of digital information resources, enables humanities scholars to explore the application of this technology not only to their research, but also to their teaching. To work effectively with machine learning, students need an understanding of technical concepts, but also a critical understanding of the biases and limitations of machine learning systems. What is the best approach to introducing humanities students to these topics, without overwhelming them? This presentation will introduce strategies for teaching machine learning to humanities students, through an evaluation of an undergraduate internship research program that I ran in 2023-24, which involved students building a system for dating medieval seal matrices from Britain.
