About this Event
In this continuing education session, Dr. Jennifer Hoskins, KU DSW 2025, brings practice expertise, her own lived wisdom, and the achievements of her DSW capstone project to support social workers’ efforts to build their competence for effective and ethical practice with individuals with intellectual disability, including those with mental illness.
Hoskins' intervention translated a program designed for students with intellectual disability for social workers, in response to professionals’ articulated needs for support in increasing competence, autonomy, and relatedness, for practice with clients with ID.
In this session, participants will learn about the gaps in social work training that imperil our collective capacity to meet the needs and build on the strengths of individuals with intellectual disability, critically interrogate their own and the profession’s biases about intellectual disability, and explore ways institutions and social work practitioners can contribute to working alliances that elevate the strengths of people with intellectual disability who are living with mental illness.
