 gy in China has flourished on a scale and with a productivity unmatched any
 where in the world. This class will review the history of archaeology in Ch
 ina-from "foreign devils on the Silk Road" and the discovery of Peking Man 
 before 1949\, to the remarkable discoveries shown in "The Chinese Exhibitio
 n" of the 1970s. We will then focus on major developments of the last 40 ye
 ars as professionalization\, generous government support\, modern practices
  and UNESCO recognition have yielded a significant reinvention of our under
 standing of the Chinese past.
