General Practices

During Paryushana, Jains engage in fasting, prayer, scripture reading, and rituals of repentance. Shvetambara Jains observe 8 days, focusing on the Kalpa Sutra, while Digambara Jains observe 10 days, reciting the Tattvartha Sutra and reflecting on ten cardinal virtues. The festival ends with Micchami Dukkadam, a heartfelt request for forgiveness from all living beings. Practices emphasize non-violence, humility, truthfulness, and detachment, fostering spiritual renewal and community harmony.

Description

Paryushana is timed according to the Hindu lunar calendar, beginning on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Bhadrapada month, typically falling in August or September. The dates vary slightly between the Shvetambara and Digambara traditions.
