About this Event
HRPP’s Final Friday Research Ethics will resume in January with a “Back to Basics” series! Researchers commonly ask, “Do I need IRB approval?” The answer is not always simple and depends on many different factors. The “Back to Basics” series will go over the foundation of the human subjects protections, why IRB exists, differences between federal regulations and KU policy, and basic requirements for IRB approval.
Researchers who are new to human subjects research would benefit from this in-depth review of human subjects protections. This series could also benefit seasoned researchers due to continuing changes and updates to federal and institutional requirements. The HRPP is offering a completion certificate for anyone who attends all 5 sessions!
The Belmont Report, which is a set of ethical principles for research involving human subjects (Respect for Persons, Beneficence, Justice), is the foundation for the regulations for the protection of human subjects. This series will take each principle and review the regulations and requirements set to ensure the principle is followed.
March: Respect for Persons: Vulnerable populations
This session will review additional ethical considerations for individuals who may be vulnerable to being coerced into participation, including individuals with diminished capacity for consent, children, and prisoners.
April: Beneficence: Assessment of risks and benefits
This session will go over how IRBs evaluate research related risks and benefits, methods for minimizing risks, and how IRBs categorize studies based on the level of risk.
May: Justice: Selection of subjects
This session will go over methods to ensure fair and equal treatment of all participants, including equal payment requirements and fair selection of subjects.
