DESCRIPTION:HRPP’s Final Friday Research Ethics will resume in January wi
 th a “Back to Basics” series! Researchers commonly ask\, “Do I need 
 IRB approval?” The answer is not always simple and depends on many diffe
 rent factors. The “Back to Basics” series will go over the foundation 
 of the human subjects protections\, why IRB exists\, differences between f
 ederal regulations and KU policy\, and basic requirements for IRB approval
 .\n\nResearchers who are new to human subjects research would benefit from
  this in-depth review of human subjects protections. This series could als
 o benefit seasoned researchers due to continuing changes and updates to fe
 deral and institutional requirements. The HRPP is offering a completion ce
 rtificate for anyone who attends all 5 sessions!\n\nThe Belmont Report\, w
 hich is a set of ethical principles for research involving human subjects 
 (Respect for Persons\, Beneficence\, Justice)\, is the foundation for the 
 regulations for the protection of human subjects. This series will take ea
 ch principle and review the regulations and requirements set to ensure the
  principle is followed.\n\nMarch: Respect for Persons: Vulnerable populati
 ons\nThis session will review additional ethical considerations for indivi
 duals who may be vulnerable to being coerced into participation\, includin
 g individuals with diminished capacity for consent\, children\, and prison
 ers.\n\nApril: Beneficence: Assessment of risks and benefits\nThis session
  will go over how IRBs evaluate research related risks and benefits\, meth
 ods for minimizing risks\, and how IRBs categorize studies based on the le
 vel of risk.\n\nMay: Justice: Selection of subjects\nThis session will go 
 over methods to ensure fair and equal treatment of all participants\, incl
 uding equal payment requirements and fair selection of subjects.\n\nRegist
