What we call Lakota art today grew directly from Lakota philosophy and lived experience. This presentation introduces participants to the foundational concepts of Wakan—the sacred life force present in all things—and Wakan Tanka, the Great Spirit. Together we will explore how these teachings are reflected in Lakota design and traditional artistic expressions, including quillwork, beadwork, hide painting, and parfleche painting, providing a foundation for the workshops that follow. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how Lakota philosophy is reflected in art, design, and traditional artistic expression.
