Please join the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES) for a Brownbag Lecture by Dr. Hannah Chapman (University of Oklahoma)
Dr. Chapman's talk is titled "'Russia's War Against Ukraine: Perspectives from Central Asia," and will take place on Tuesday October 22 at 12pm in Bailey Hall Rm. 318.
The February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia has profoundly influenced the geopolitical landscape of Central Asia, compelling countries in the region to reevaluate their ties with Russia and the global community at large. But how have the publics in Central Asia reacted to the war? This talk explores wartime attitudes in Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic—two nations with deep historical, economic, and cultural ties to Russia—and examines how the conflict has reshaped public attitudes toward the international community. In doing so, this research reveals key insights into the changing dynamics of regional identity and international relations in Central Asia.
Dr. Hannah S. Chapman is the Theodore P. Romanoff Assistant Professor of Russian Studies and an Assistant Professor of International and Area Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Her research interests include information manipulation and public opinion in authoritarian regimes, democratic backsliding and authoritarian entrenchment, and the international and domestic dimensions of Russian and Central Asian politics. Dr. Chapman’s book, Dialogue with the Dictator: Authoritarian Legitimation and Information Management in Putin’s Russia was published by Cambridge University Press in 2024. Her work has also appeared or is forthcoming in Comparative Political Studies, Comparative Politics, Democratization, Government & Opposition, International Studies Perspectives, International Studies Quarterly, Perspectives on Politics, and The Washington Post, among others.
