About this Event
View mapJellyfish aren't just found in the ocean—they live in freshwater environments across the Midwest. Come learn about jellyfish with Anna Klompen, an evolutionary biologist and venomologist who studies jellyfish venom systems and how they change. Anna is a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow in the Gibson Lab at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City, Mo., where she studies how jellyfish build their unique stingers. She will discuss her studies of jellyfish in Kansas and Missouri, and how jellyfish have become tools for exploring biological questions related to evolution and ecology. Anna will bring along some live jellyfish so participants can have an up-close look at these animals. For background about jellyfish and Anna's work, listen to Alie Ward's Ologies interview with Anna—"Toxinology"—about jellyfish venom.
Bring: A mug for tea/coffee to help us reduce waste
Science Sundays is a monthly series of in-person public talks at the KU Field Station. These Sunday afternoon talks cover a variety of science topics, including research happening at the Field Station. Talks are free and open to the public—anyone who wants to learn more about science—but may not interest younger audiences.
Registration will be capped at 40 each month; please RSVP by emailing Wendy Holman (wendyholman@ku.edu), KU Field Station education program coordinator. Snacks provided.
The KU Field Station is managed by the Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research.
