DESCRIPTION:Long regarded as a bastion of stability under Chancellor Angela
Merkel (2005-2021)\, Germany finds itself today in a funk. Events like th
e Russian invasion of Ukraine\, the Chinese EV export boom\, and the re-el
ection of Donald J. Trump to the White House have all undermined Berlin's
foreign policy stances. At home\, the resurgent far-right "Alternative for
Germany" (AfD) party is securing its best results ever. Once highly regar
ded for its contrition toward its Nazi past\, Germany and its Holocaust me
mory culture have come under fire for blind spots toward colonialism and w
ar crimes. Adding to the unpredictability\, Germany elected a new Chancell
or on February 23\, 2025.\n\n \n\nWhere is Germany headed after the electi
ons this February? In this lecture\, Prof. Dr. Timothy Nunan (University o
f Regensburg) – an American teaching in Germany for over ten years – w
ill offer his reflections on what the elections in Germany portend for the
future of the country. He will also discuss potential impacts of the elec
tions on the future of German-American relations. Can Europe's largest eco
nomy shake its near-zero growth rates\, or is Berlin doomed to remain the
"sick man of Europe"? Can the new German government rally the EU as a coun
terweight to the United States\, China\, and Russia? And how will the rece
nt German elections affect American policy toward Europe? Prof. Dr. Nunan
looks forward to discussing these questions and more in his talk.
