The University of Kansas Libraries invite the campus community to attend Thursday Movie Matinees, a new monthly curated film experience designed to bring cinema and scholarship together. Each screening will take place in The Kettle, Watson Library 325.

Beginning March 5, the series will kick off with a celebration of the acclaimed Studio Ghibli, showcasing three films that highlight the cultural, historical, and thematic depth that make the studio’s work enduring favorites. Exploring the worlds of creator Hayao Miyazaki through guided introductions and post-film conversations, each session will feature a 15-20 minute introduction and facilitated discussion led by film scholar and KU film and media studies professor, David Mai, providing insights into the themes, context, and cinematic craft. No prior knowledge of the films is required to attend or participate. Free popcorn will be provided at each event.

Seating is limited at each screening, and attendees are encouraged to register early. When a session reaches capacity, registrants will have the option to join a waitlist.

More information, including links to register, can be found on the Thursday Movie Matinees LibGuide.
