Social workers play crucial roles in schools, including providing mental health interventions to students and shaping educational environments so that they prevent and effectively respond to trauma. As more students, teachers, and others within schools come to education with their own trauma histories and as more educators and researchers recognize that elements of the school environment can exacerbate or cause trauma, especially for some groups of students, social workers’ contributions will be increasingly essential for creating the conditions in which learning can happen. In this session, participants will learn with and from a distinguished expert in school-based mental health, trauma-informed education, and school system change, in conversation with trauma-certified educators whose teaching contributes to climates that facilitate both academic achievement and individual well-being. The session will help to position professionals to advance toward trauma-informed schools and to integrate trauma-informed principles into all practice domains.
