DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays\, Oct. 26\, Nov. 2 & 9\, 9:30-11 a.m.\n\nThe Civil War
caused a lot of soul-searching in the U.S.\, and other events coincided to
make the late Nineteenth Century fertile ground for new religions (Christi
 an Science\, Seventh Day Adventist\, Jehovah's Witness\, and Pentecostalism
) and new challenges (the poor in the great cities\, leading to Dwight Mood
y's conservative approach and Walter Rauschenbusch's Social Gospel). Hangin
g over it all was the growth of conservative theologies\, which rejected th
e Higher Criticism that tried to place the Bible in a historical context an
d rejected modern science. All this culminated in the "Modernist Controvers
 y" that ended -- or didn't -- in the 1925 Scope's Trial. We live with the c
 onsequences of that today.
